Educational Aim for Statistics Major
Statistics is the discipline, which paves the way to the correct decision in an objective and scientific way. To that end, it collects data from different sources such as nature and complex society, and summarizes them in an appropriate way to reach the reasonable explanation about the problem at hand. Statistics not only play a key role in solving problems raised in many different disciplines, but also have a huge effect on the our society ranging from practical areas such as weather forecast and opinion poll to specialized areas such as finance, agriculture, medical science, and energy technology.
With the advent of fourth industrial revolution era, the interest in Statistics is getting larger and the demand on the role of Statistics is steadily increasing. Reflecting this situation, our department teaches basic concept and fundamentals of Statistics, theoretical properties and development of statistical model, and computation skills for data analysis. In addition, we continue to develop new classes dealing with the problems emerging in the contemporary society. We then teach the newly developed classes as well as currently operating curriculum in order to train technical professionals who fit the fourth industrial era based on AI technology.
We encourage our students to do research on topics such as big data analysis and the development of statistical model, for solving the real problems raised by many different industry such as finance, agriculture, medical science, and energy technology. Through the collaboration along with industry, we aim to foster the ability to solve the real problem that industry faces, not the problem in textbook. Furthermore, we make global connection with outstanding oversea universities, and provide our students with the chance to work with international scholars.
Based on the knowledge from education, our student will have the ability to solve the real problem, to understand the principle behind nature, and to reasonably explain the phenomenon happening in complex society. Therefore, our ultimate educational goal is to produce the versatile scientists of excellent research ability equipped with statistical knowledge , who is competent in the fourth industrial era based on AI technology.
Education Goal for Data Science Major
Data science can be defined as a discipline that extends statistics to handle not only conventional structured data such as categorical and continuous data, but also unstructured data such as images and texts. Data science can analyze the data of size from tens to tens of milions, but is more useful for big data of a scale that is difficult to be analyzed with existing statistical packages. In particular, big data processing technologies such as distributed processing and parallel computing play an important role to extract meaningful knowledge and information from big data, and innovative algorithms such as machine learning and deep learning are considered important to effectively handle unstructured data. In addition, the data science methodology is very suitable for analyzing unstructured data, so it can be easily integrated with a wide range of domains such as humanities, law, art, medical care, and finance.
In this department, the education process is specialized to nurture data science specialists. Department curriculum in computer science, data science, and domain (medicine/finance/agriculture/energy) subjects and continuous industry-university cooperation help students to have convergence industry competency and to enhance research competitiveness in the big data field by encouraging research in related fields. In addition, we are nurturing global innovative talents through international exchanges programs and joint research with excellent scholars in overseas universities with the establishment of a global network.
With the development of high-performance computing, big data, and the Internet of Things in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the importance of data analysis and processing technology increases, and the demand for data analysis experts is rapidly increasing. Therefore, the educational goal is to train data scientists and data analysts with competitiveness in each their research field to lead the 4th industrial revolution.
